If you’re like me, you may be feeling a little “off today.” In the name of Thanksgiving, I indulged in foods high in fat and sugar. The good news is that when healthy becomes a lifestyle, a celebratory indulgence doesn’t set us back. The not-so-great news is that habitual healthy eating means that even just one “less healthy” food/drink choice will be noticed by our bodies. Whether it shows up as brain fog, bloat, irritability, a headache, or puffy eyes – you may feel the Thanksgiving feast long after the leftovers are gone.

To help your body get back to its most comfortable state, I recommend 3 quick tips:

  1. Drink lots of water
  2. Exercise for at least 30 minutes
  3. Stick to anti-inflammatory foods

These recommendations lead to today’s favorite Friyay anti-inflammatory remedy: Turmeric Almond Milk Latte!

What you’ll need:

For the almond milk:

  • 1 cup raw almonds (soaked overnight in cool water -or- soaked for 1-2 hours in very hot water)
  • 4 cups water (ideally, filtered)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

For the latte:

  • 1 cup of fresh almond milk (from above) *use 2 cups for a bigger mug
  • 2 teaspoons turmeric
  • 1/2 tablespoon minced ginger (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg

How to make the magic happen:

Almond Milk:

  • After soaking the almonds, strain and drain the water.
  • Add soaked almonds and 4 cups of water to a high-speed blender and blend until smooth (1-2 minutes).
  • Strain the milk. There are many ways to do this, but my preference is to cover the mouth of a mason jar with cheesecloth (I use a rubber band to secure).
  • Reserve 1 cup for the latte (8 oz mug) *use 2 cups for a bigger mug
  • Refrigerate remaining milk.

Pro Tip: Use the almond meal to make a healthy snack like these energy balls

Latte:

  • If you want to include ginger, I recommend blending with the reserved cup of milk in a high-speed blender for 30-60 seconds then follow steps 3-5.
  • If you want to omit ginger, then pour reserved milk directly into a saucepan.
  • Cook milk over high heat (until hot – avoid boiling).
  • Once hot, remove from heat and add the turmeric, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • Froth (optional) or just pour into a mug and serve!
